Game Day Glam!

By: Cinthya Rubio, Marketing and Communications Director @ Our Hands For Hope

The 2014 World Series is the 110th edition of Major League Baseball’s championship series. This year two amazing teams, The San Francisco Giants and The Kansas City Royals, are facing each other to see who takes the title and bragging rights of being Champion.

Today game 7 will be played and the team that wins takes it all!

Usually when attending a baseball game or party, it is customary to wear the team colors that you are cheering for. If you have a team t-shirt or jersey, that will definitely score you some extra fashion points. Showing off your fashion sense at these events is usually not a prerequisite to attend, but have fun with it, it is “America’s Pastime” after all!

I have put together two looks for todays World Series. The name of the game is “Game Day Glam“!

Dress up that team t-shirt! One of this seasons trends is leather or pleather. Dont want to look like you arrived on a Harley Motorcycle?

Blue Jeans are always a great go-to wardrobe piece but for some extra glam look for some that have a metallic finish, glitzy and shiny accents are coming strong this season. Add some extra texture to this sleek look Luchita Sweater and a Mirna beanie

Fall for Fashion with Our Hands For Hope

By: Cinthya Rubio, Marketing and Communications Director @ Our Hands For Hope

Fall is finally here and pumpkin spice is in the air! We were anxious to bust out our new line of ponchos, sweaters, hats and scarves to walk the streets all bundled up in comfy warmth.

While some know exactly what to wear, others are wondering what the trends are for this year, and if they should even attempt to follow them. We think trends are not rules set in stone, but more like guidelines that you can decide to follow. Just remember: “Fashion” just like art is a means to express yourself; don’t be afraid to add some of your own personality to your look!

Here are four major trends for this Fall 2014:

  • Ponchos– We saw them early this year at London Fashion Week and haven’t stopped seeing them yet! This great outerwear piece compliments all body shapes and can be worn with a variety of outfits.

  • Hosiery, Leggings & Tights– with patterns, texture and variety of colors they add an extra wow factor to outfits this Fall.

hosiery texture, color and pattern

  • Leather or Pleather– the sleek look of this material has come back this year. The natural black and brown tones are always welcome, but don’t be afraid to navigate towards colors like oxblood, forest green or yellow for the more audacious crowds.

The soft, cozy texture of alpaca knits compliment the sleek, cool texture of leather accessories.

  • Metallic– bling will always be a girl’s best friend, but this season metallic accents are completing looks left and right. Silver, platinum, gold and copper are not just for jewelry; consider using these tones for nails and even makeup!

Incorporating all of these things to an outfit might seem daunting, but it can be done. Just remember to always add your own personality!

Celebrating Inspirational Women: Lynna Roberts

Two weeks ago we launched Celebrating Inspirational Women for Mother’s Day. We sent word-out through cyberland requesting stories and quotes of #InspirationalWomen. I have been touched by the love, honor, and gratitude in the words we receive each day. The following story is from Kelly Bilco, a woman whom I regard as an #InspirationalWoman. She has opened her heart and home to Our Hands For Hope as we embarked on the quest of moving into Washington area stores. Kelly wrote this beautiful and heartfelt story about her mom.

“A woman of beauty, style, substance  and strength.”

By: Kelly Roberts Bilco (daughter of Lynna)

Lynna Roberts … A woman of beauty, style, substance  and strength. As a child bride of a soldier in the US Army, a young mom with three small children at the age of 22, Lynna found herself parenting much of the time alone and away from her own Mother and family members. Her rise to the challenge was just the beginning of shaping who she is today. Life wasn’t always easy and she was a rock and a constant in the midst of a lot of change. It took a great deal of skill to make a home beautiful with the little money they had.  Her home has always been her castle and it shows!  Her children were always dressed fashionably because of her amazing style and flair for flash and her knack for bargain shopping. At the beautiful age of almost 70, her  children grown with children of their own, (and a new great grandmother of two) Lynna continues to pour into the lives of everyone she comes in contact with. Always lighting up the room with her infectious laughter, offering a word of encouragement and hope. She continues to help others in so many ways. Decorating their homes, helping them with their fashion and beauty, and more importantly, always loving people and giving them what they need.  Her generosity is off the charts. After battling breast cancer this last year – she has been an inspiration and example to many. Always reaching out to the hurting and showing compassion and giving hope to the many people that have come forward with cancer stories of their own. She is such a light to all who come in contact with her. As the pastors wife of a church in Northern VA, she has the platform to mentor, teach and encourage women all around her. She has blessed so many with her beauty, light and love.

Celebrating 50 years of marriage this past  January 31st,  you will see a glimpse of the beauty she exemplifies in this photo, as she lights up when the doors open and she sees a sanctuary of people who love and honor her! All there to  surprise her! She never had a real wedding or a wedding dress! Ready to walk down the aisle to celebrate 50 years of love and life… She exemplifies grace, compassion, style, beauty and substance… in every sense of these words.

Over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, we set up shop at the CornerStone Sonoma along highway 121 in Sonoma, California. We were stationed at Potter Green & Co showing our knits in all their wonderful colors, displaying how to wear them, and telling the story of how  they are created and brought to you straight from Peru.

Fall Fashion in an Indian Summer

By: Alicia Fischer, Communications @ Our Hands For Hope

California is known for its great weather and incredible outdoors. Here in Northern California, our story is a little different. While the sun definitely heats things up in the Napa Valley, our friends directly south in San Francisco aren’t so lucky.

Thankfully, San Franciscans are finally experiencing their Indian Summer. As the rest of the country starts to get into fall, San Fran is extending summer just a little bit longer with some fun in the sun.

Here’s an ode to knits in an Indian Summer. While the rest of the country begins to bundle up, you can still rock a beanie and some boots as the sun shines through fall.

Behind the Essence of NapaStyle

By: Alicia Fischer, Communications @ Our Hands For Hope

A few weeks ago the team was excited to get a special invitation from NapaStyle
to be featured in their September catalog.

NapaStyle is a store based out of Yountville dedicated to showcasing the essence of Napa Valley and the uniqueness of living in wine country. It is brought to life by the mind and culinary mastery of Chef Michael Chiarello whose cooking revolves around the simplicity of wine country living. NapaStyle features items from food to cooking accessories and decor that encompass what it means to live in Napa Valley, and we are thrilled to be included as one of those items!

With harvest happening around the valley, these knits and colors pair perfectly for the long, increasingly cooler nights that lay ahead as we celebrate the 2013 harvest season.

How to wear a Summer dress in the Fall

By: Cinthya Rubio, Marketing Director @ Our Hands For Hope

It’s that time of year again when the transition from hot summer days of drinking a mojito at the beach are quickly ending, and chilly evenings sitting around a fire pit sipping on an Oktoberfest beer are just around the corner. The thought of having to buy a whole new wardrobe for the change of season excites and daunts many, but knowing how to use a fun summer dress as a fall item will take your fashion sense to another level!

Nothing screams fall fashion more than boots and knits, well maybe flannel but we’ll leave that for another conversation. I love knee high riding boots but it seems like everyone is following that trend, but there are other options people! I always incline for that subtle rocker look without looking like I’m trying to resuscitate bands like “Guns N’ Roses”, so I paired up my dress with some awesome Dr. Martens boots. Now wearing a dress during the fall or winter is torture when your legs  and arms are exposed to the chill of the wind so look for some opaque tights to protect your oh so beautiful legs, and a sweater that won’t add unneeded bulk but that will complement the shape of the dress you are wearing. Now the fun part is accessorizing! I am a fan of hats and Our Hands For Hope has the cutest hand knit hat EVER! I added their Rosemary hat to this look to match up with the boots, sprinkling some statement jewelry pieces like this brass cuff, gold rush necklace from Noonday Collection, and some Griffin Sunglasses give my look just the right amount of pizzazz.
