The Gift That Gives Back

Our Hands For Hope is built upon empowering women all over the world in at-risk communities.  One cause we are most passionate about is helping the girls and young women who have been rescued from sex trafficking.  One organization we have teamed up with this holiday season is a New Day For Children based in California.

A New Day For Children offers safe houses, education, medical and therapeutic help to American young girls ages 10 and up who have been rescued. They also offer mentorship, job placement, and support to furthering their education.

They are currently working on building two new facilities. One for girls from 10-17 and the other 18 and up who don’t have safe homes to return to after rehabilitation.

So for this holiday season, “Give the gift that gives back”.

A portion of all purchases from Our Hands For Hope now until December 31, 2015 will go to

New Day For Children.

Celebrating Inspirational Women: Cheryl Murray

“My Mom is the Definition of Selfless…”

By: Shayla Newman

My mother and I have always been close. She’s my everything. But I am not writing to talk about our relationship but what an amazing woman she is.

My mom was unable to have children and I was made possible by her friend carrying me for her. Since the first day I was born I have never seen so much love come from one person. My mom is the definition of selfless. Not only has she always done for me, she is always doing for others.

My mom has owned her family daycare for over 30 years. She is not only good at her job, she has an outpouring of love for each and every child that comes through her door. I truly believe it was Gods plan for her to have only one child so she could love all the other children she has helped raise throughout the years.

It has only been since I have had my daughter that I have truly come face to face with what an amazing woman she is. She is so patient, so kind, and so caring with my daughter and with others. She works with 12 children everyday, keeps her house in order, prepares meals for the children and my father, and does it all with a smile on her face. She finds true joy in helping others.

She is truly an amazing woman.

Shayla too, is a creative and inspirational woman. Not only does she use her creative expression in her daughters wardrobe (as seen above) she is  a young and successful entrepreneur. She owns and operates her own styling salon, Chandelier, in Napa, California.

Celebrating Inspirational Women: Lynna Roberts

Two weeks ago we launched Celebrating Inspirational Women for Mother’s Day. We sent word-out through cyberland requesting stories and quotes of #InspirationalWomen. I have been touched by the love, honor, and gratitude in the words we receive each day. The following story is from Kelly Bilco, a woman whom I regard as an #InspirationalWoman. She has opened her heart and home to Our Hands For Hope as we embarked on the quest of moving into Washington area stores. Kelly wrote this beautiful and heartfelt story about her mom.

“A woman of beauty, style, substance  and strength.”

By: Kelly Roberts Bilco (daughter of Lynna)

Lynna Roberts … A woman of beauty, style, substance  and strength. As a child bride of a soldier in the US Army, a young mom with three small children at the age of 22, Lynna found herself parenting much of the time alone and away from her own Mother and family members. Her rise to the challenge was just the beginning of shaping who she is today. Life wasn’t always easy and she was a rock and a constant in the midst of a lot of change. It took a great deal of skill to make a home beautiful with the little money they had.  Her home has always been her castle and it shows!  Her children were always dressed fashionably because of her amazing style and flair for flash and her knack for bargain shopping. At the beautiful age of almost 70, her  children grown with children of their own, (and a new great grandmother of two) Lynna continues to pour into the lives of everyone she comes in contact with. Always lighting up the room with her infectious laughter, offering a word of encouragement and hope. She continues to help others in so many ways. Decorating their homes, helping them with their fashion and beauty, and more importantly, always loving people and giving them what they need.  Her generosity is off the charts. After battling breast cancer this last year – she has been an inspiration and example to many. Always reaching out to the hurting and showing compassion and giving hope to the many people that have come forward with cancer stories of their own. She is such a light to all who come in contact with her. As the pastors wife of a church in Northern VA, she has the platform to mentor, teach and encourage women all around her. She has blessed so many with her beauty, light and love.

Lynna Roberts exemplifying grace, compassion, style, beauty and substance…

Celebrating 50 years of marriage this past  January 31st,  you will see a glimpse of the beauty she exemplifies in this photo, as she lights up when the doors open and she sees a sanctuary of people who love and honor her! All there to  surprise her! She never had a real wedding or a wedding dress! Ready to walk down the aisle to celebrate 50 years of love and life… She exemplifies grace, compassion, style, beauty and substance… in every sense of these words.

A Very Fair Holiday Season

by Alicia Fischer, Communications @ Our Hands For Hope

Many of us feel that the holidays should be a time of giving. Sometimes, we can lose sight of that among the wrapping paper and doorbuster deals featured in every storefront window. For those that need some help taking a step back and refocusing on what matters during the holidays, here are some companies that make great gifts while supporting an even greater cause. They are all fair trade businesses (or feature fair trade products), so they are sure to continue giving throughout the year, even after the holiday lights are stowed for next year.

Take a look at some items to make for a very fair holiday season.

For the Indulgent

TCHO New American Chocolates is a fair trade chocolate company based out of San Francisco, California. Their business is fueled by TCHOSource – their practice of working directly with cacao farmers in Ghana, Madagascar, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, and Peru to create the best, sustainable chocolate out there. While they specialize in the natural flavors of dark chocolate, they also sell milk chocolates and their newest addition, TCHOPairings.

For the Caffeinated

For those that like a little pep in their step, two tea makers – Numi Teas and David’s Tea – have some great options no matter what flavors you’re looking for.

PureTea-Landing copy

Numi Tea is based out of Oakland, California and features 100% organic, no GMO, and (of course) fairly traded teas. They have a wide range of flavors, from your typical holiday chai and green teas to some savory options like Broccoli Cilantro and Carrott Curry.

DavidsTea-1

DavidsTea-2

David’s Tea is a company originating in Vancouver, but has grown to open up their unique tea shops in many major cities across the US and Canada. While not all of their teas are fair trade, they do distinguish which ones are and even sell a fair trade tea gift box including some of their most popular fair trade creations.

For the Relaxed

There is a company based out of Southern California called Heritage Link Brands. What do they do? They’ve made it their mission to product sustainable, socially responsible wines from vintners throughout Africa and bring them to the rest of the world. So here you have the best of both worlds: the ability to support some of the most ethical and socially responsible vintners of Africa, and some amazing wine to boot.

For the Fresh & Clean

HandinHand

One company wanted to do more to help the world and created a product that helps in more ways that one. Hand in Hand Sustainable Soap provides soap and one month of clean water for every bar of their sustainable soap purchased. Their soaps come in a wide range of scents and are 100% eco-friendly, biodegradable, and fairly traded. It is definitely one gift to give and feel good about.

For the Bold & Glamorous

CLASSICSAD_RETAIL-01-X3

Similar to Our Hands for Hope, 31Bits is a fair trade fashion business helping women help themselves. Their efforts are focused in Uganda, and the women there are making some truly fantastic pieces of jewelry from the simple and classic to bold statement pieces. Perfect for the person on your list who stands out from the rest!

For the Urbanite

For those who don’t want to forgot style but just don’t want to feel girly, make sure you introduce them to Oaklandish. A local Oakland, California retail shop, this company doesn’t only put out trendy t-shirts and hoodies but also gives back to their local community, donating 10% of proceeds to artists and other nonprofits who are doing pioneering work within the community. Check out a list of where the proceeds go here.

For the Fashionista
